Water

Water is a basic element of the nature that is vital for life. Water is important for the proper development of people, animals and nature.

The relation Water-Health is specially linked, since the lack of drinking water leads to the appearance of illnesses such as trachoma, leprosy, tuberculosis, pertussis, tetanus and diphtheria, schistosomiasis, intestinal Helminthiasis, known as illness linked to the absence of hygiene, that are practically eradicated in the developed countries.

Chronicle dehydration of the brain cells together with the lack of sodium and of an important amino acid – tryptophan – is the main cause of brain pathologies: Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson, multiple sclerosis, cerebellar ataxia, depression, arthritis, lumbago, and migraine or chronicle fatigue.

As the lack of water and insufficient consumption, the consumption of water in bad conditions leads to the appearance of illnesses such as cholera, typhoid fever, shigella, polio, meningitis and hepatitis A and E.

In all the cases, the access to drinking water and the cleaning up contribute to considerably reduce the children’s mortality, especially in the case of the ones still on milk.

The access to water required by the World Health Organization (WHO) is of 100 liters/day per person to cover the necessities of hygiene and consumption, while 50 l/d/p means an intermediate access, 20 l/d/p a basic access and 5 l/d/p is considered as without access to water. In this last case, to accede to water it is necessary to walk more than a kilometer or more than 30 minutes.

With relation to the objectives of development of the millennium, objective 7 is to guarantee the

sustainability of the environment; objective 10 is reducing the percentage of people that lack sustainable access to drinking water; in relation to objective 4 and 6 is the reduction of children’s mortality and fight against illness. [1].
